A message from the Conference Convenor

Brendan Flanagan - Conference Convenor

The Organising Committee extends to you an invitation to attend the SimTecT Health 2009 Simulation Conference. Since 2000, the success of SimTecT Health has confirmed the conference as the premier healthcare simulation forum in the Asia Pacific Region; bringing together experts from across all healthcare disciplines, as well as expertise in patient safety, healthcare education, human factors, systems design, technology and quality improvement, to tackle the challenges faced by the healthcare industry in the new millennium. We looked forward to seeing you at SimTecT Health 2009.

Brendan Flanagan

Some Simulation Developments in Australia

On November 29 2008, the Council of Australian Governments (COAG) agreed to a $1.6 billion health workforce reform package. The National Health Workforce Taskforce was given carriage of, among other things, a National Plan for Simulated Learning Environments. COAG agreed to an investment of $96 million over 4 years for clinical training in Simulated Learning Environments (SLEs). A national strategy will be developed to complement and maximise existing effort and investment.

The plan will provide for:

  • an equitable spread of simulation facilities to all training providers
  • capital funding plus recurrent funding for equipment and staffing
  • a focus on accessibility to remote centres through mobile units

Stage 1 of the project (May-August 2009) will involve an Australia-wide mapping of the current SLE programs and planned future programs.

Stage 2 (Feb-June 2010) will involve the development and establishment of new centres and programs and the re-development of some existing centres.

The next twelve months promises to be an exciting time for investment in simulation in the Australian healthcare system.
