Symposium: Emergency Management / National SecurityThursday 3 June, 1030–1230 This is included in the Full Conference Registration, or Thursday Day Registration, or attendees can register just for the Symposium for $355. Outline of SymposiumBuilding on the SimTecT 2009 Symposium, this session will further develop the key issues, concepts, technologies and challenges associated with the use of simulation within emergency management and national security. The theme of Command, Control and Communications (C3) will explore the key issues of inter-agency coordination and collaboration, as well as detailed elements such as exercise planning and management at all levels, from site level response to national level coordination. A facilitated discussion between a panel of stakeholders and delegates, referring to a number of case studies, will allow issues to be explored in depth, and actions defined, to progress the development of this sector. Come along and challenge the simulation community with your difficult problems and engage with local and international stakeholders to jointly develop solutions. Who Should AttendFederal, state and local government agencies, defence, utilities, telecommunications providers, major infrastructure owners, healthcare, emergency management and national security consultants, simulation providers, data providers. This symposium has broad applicability, from senior management and government officials who are seeking an overview of training, analysis and operational support in emergency management, to trainers, technologists and engineers who are interested in applications and new developments in this area. Program
A/Prof Andrew Wilford Andrew Wilford (or “Wilf” as he prefers to be known) has enjoyed a long career in the Aerospace and Defence sectors, holding senior positions with Boeing Australia and Air New Zealand. He was also involved with the development of the Complex Project Management Competency Standards that have been adopted by the Australian Defence Materiel Organisation. As Clinical Associate Professor of Project Management at Bond University’s Mirvac School of Sustainable Development, Mr Wilford is currently researching project management capability models, leadership systems, complex network-centric operations and the application of sustainability principles in project management. He is currently working on a PhD in applying best practice in safety and mission critical systems design, development, operation and sustainment to “wicked” sustainability problems.
Chief Superintendent Andrew Short Can the Simulation Industry better support Emergency Service Operations?
At his current rank of Chief Superintendent, Andrew is currently the Director of Professional Development for the Queensland Fire and Rescue Service. In this role he is responsible for the conduct of professional development across QFRS. A big believer in life long learning, Andrew strongly supports the simple notion that everyone can learn something new - everyday. In line with this belief, Andrew was in 2009 awarded a Masters Degree in Leadership and Management from Charles Sturt University. Given his earlier role in managing an operational command, Andrew is no stranger to the challenges associated with providing effective emergency management. Ever passionate about the benefits of getting these aspects right, Andrew has maintained an active interest in investigating how organisations may do better with how they lead, manage and train to achieve the outcome of operational excellence. Andrew was acknowledged for his achievements in this and other QFRS operational areas in 2007 when he was awarded the Australian Fire Service Medal, the highest national award for fire service officers in Australia. He is also a life member of the Royal National Agricultural and Industrial Association of Queensland. Andrew is married with two young children, and with his family enjoys travelling within (and outside of) Australia. Andrew is an avid ship wreck scuba diver, and uses this sport as a means of gaining respite from the work occasions where people walk in and ask "have you got a minute to discuss a HR issue"? He also enjoys the fact that Blackberries don't do too well 40 metres underwater.
