Cate McIntosh - Conference Convenor

Note - SimTecT may contribute to Continuing Education Points.

New Workshops conducted by two of our keynote speakers - Rene Amalberti and Dan Raemer.

We are delighted to announce that Rene Amalberti will be conducting a workshop based on his research exploring the problem of violations (deviations from standard procedures) in healthcare. A must for those interested in developing a deeper understanding of what constitutes safety.

Those interested in using debriefing as part of their research, or in assessing and improving the debriefing process will benefit from Dan Raemer's workshop which will introduce the use of DASH - the Debriefing Assessment for Simulation in Healthcare.

Poster rounds -10 poster presenters, selected on the basis of scientific merit, have been invited to deliver a brief oral presentation describing their work and take questions from the audience. This session provides a great opportunity to hear about works in progress and innovative projects happening in our community.

Important note on in-conference workshop logistics: You will receive a ticket for each workshop you are registered for in your welcome pack. Tickets for workshops with vacancies will be available from the registration desk each morning. Please check with the desk regularly for updates during the conference. Please note that there will be no entry to the workshops unless you have a ticket.

Pre-conference workshops: The ½ day pre-conference workshops are intensive, interactive skill development sessions. An exciting opportunity this year is the workshop conducted by Stewart Dunn and Paul Heinrich. Dunn and Heinrich have extensive experience working with standardized patients and this highly interactive workshop provides a great opportunity to reflect on how we teach communication skills. They will present empirical evidence gathered in a simulated setting of the effects of difficult conversations on clinicians, and explore how to develop an evidence-based approach when teaching health professionals.

*** NEW FOR 2010 ***

1. Conference Duration:

The Conference has been extended from 2.5 to 3 days (in addition to pre-conference workshops) to maintain a balance between plenary sessions, panel discussions, workshops, poster sessions and professional networking opportunities. There will be opportunities for Special Interest Groups to meet during the conference.

2. Research & Scholarship:

To encourage research excellence in simulation, there will be awards for best research abstracts, and to encourage scholarship in simulation, there will an opportunity for full papers to undergo Peer Review.

3. Human Factors

To reflect the level of interest in, and intimate relationship between human factors and simulation, there will be a human factors stream throughout the conference. This will replace the Human Factors Symposium previously held separate to SimTecT Health.

We enjoyed renewing old friendships and establishing new ones in Melbourne at SimTecT 2010.
